PET/CT - Positron emission tomography

The most informative method for diagnosing cancer. PET/CT allows you to detect tumors at early stages, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and accurately determine the stage of the disease.

What is PET/CT?

An innovative radiodiagnostic method that combines functional and anatomical imaging

Positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography (PET/CT)— This is a modern method of radiation diagnostics, which simultaneously shows the functioning of organs at the cellular level and their exact anatomy. The method is based on the administration of a radiopharmaceutical (RP) with a short half-life, which accumulates in tissues with increased metabolism, including tumor cells.

By combining PET and CT data in one scanner, the doctor receives a complete picture: not only where the lesion is located, but also how active it is. This allows you to distinguish benign from malignant tumors with high accuracy, determine the stage of the disease and select the optimal treatment tactics.

PET/CT is indispensable for primary diagnosis, searching for metastases, assessing the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as when planning surgical intervention. The study takes from 20 to 40 minutes and does not require special preparation.

1

Introduction of contrast

The patient is given a radiopharmaceutical (fluorodeoxyglucose) intravenously. The substance is safe and completely eliminated from the body within a few hours.

2

Scanning

The patient is placed on the tomograph table. The device scans the entire body in a few minutes, recording the accumulation of radiopharmaceuticals in various tissues.

3

Analysis of results

The radiologist analyzes the received images and issues a conclusion. The results help the attending physician determine further treatment tactics.

Benefits of PET/CT

Why PET/CT is the “gold standard” for cancer diagnostics

High accuracy

Detects tumors with a diameter of 3–5 mm, which is significantly earlier than other imaging methods.

Whole body in one session

A complete scan from the crown to the mid-thighs reveals lesions and metastases throughout the body.

Painless

A completely non-invasive method - the patient does not feel pain or discomfort during the examination.

Early diagnosis

Detects malignant cells at the cellular level long before the appearance of anatomical changes.

Treatment control

Allows you to objectively assess the effectiveness of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgical treatment.

Without complicated preparation

The minimum preparation is to abstain from food 6 hours before the examination.

Preparing for the examination

Follow simple guidelines for accurate results

1

Fasting for 6 hours

Do not eat anything 6 hours before your scheduled examination time. This is necessary to reduce insulin levels, which may affect the distribution of the radiotracer.

2

You can drink water

Regular still water is allowed and even encouraged. This will help you visualize your bladder better. Avoid sugary drinks, juices and tea.

3

Report pregnancy or nursing

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, be sure to inform us in advance. The study may be delayed or carried out with special precautions.

4

Arrive 15 minutes before your procedure

Please arrive on your scheduled day 15 minutes before your examination to complete registration and preparation. Bring your doctor's referral and previous test results with you.

Frequently asked questions about PET/CT

Answers to popular questions from our patients

Yes, PET/CT is a safe diagnostic method. The radiation dose for PET/CT is comparable to the dose for conventional CT and is about 10–15 mSv (depending on the study area). The radiopharmaceuticals used have a short half-life and are completely eliminated from the body within a few hours. For a healthy person, this dose does not pose a danger. The medical benefit of the study far outweighs the minimal risk from radiation exposure.

The scanning time itself ranges from 20 to 40 minutes. However, the total visit time includes preparation, administration of the radiopharmaceutical, and a waiting period (about 60 minutes) for its distribution in the body. Therefore, it is recommended to plan around 2.5–3 hours in the diagnostic department. The scanning time depends on the volume of the study (brain, chest, whole body, etc.).

A referral from your primary care physician is recommended, but is not required. You can sign up for a PET/CT scan on your own initiative for a preventive examination. If there is a referral, the results will be more complete, since the doctor will be able to compare PET/CT data with the clinical picture and other studies. When registering, check with the administrator what documents will be required.

The frequency of PET/CT is determined by the attending physician depending on the clinical situation. As a rule, control studies are prescribed 3–6 months after the course of treatment. To assess the effectiveness of therapy, PET/CT may be prescribed 2-3 months after the start of treatment. The decision to re-examine is always made by the doctor, based on individual indications and taking into account the permissible total radiation dose.

Yes, PET/CT after a course of chemotherapy is one of the main ways to assess the effectiveness of treatment. As a rule, the study is prescribed 2-3 weeks after the last course of chemotherapy to avoid false-positive results associated with inflammatory reactions. The exact period is determined by the attending physician.PET/CT after treatment allows you to objectively assess the tumor response to therapy and make a decision on further tactics.
